Meet Chicago's Event Planner

Big Bowl guests may wonder how a restaurant without private dining rooms can host a party, but that’s what makes the new special events coordinator so special.

Meet

Meet us at the Good Food Festival, March 15-17

If the locavore movement is starting to feel more like a lifestyle, thank the farmers, the individuals who support them and the people behind the Good Food Festival & Conference that begins today and runs through Saturday at the UIC Forum.

Fortune Hour- Big Bowl on Ohio March 15

Thursday, March 15 - 5:00 to 7:00 PM

Celebrating Goose Island, and the release of 312 in cans.

Big Bowl is teaming up with Goose Island on March 15 to celebrate the launch of 312 in cans.

With a name inspired by downtown Chicago’s area code, 312 is an urban wheat beer.

Support Local, All Year Round

As we all know from watching the National Geographic Channel; during the winter months, farmers head into caves to hibernate, and wake up for the next growing season.

I don’t think so.

Following are a list of winter markets, featuring locally produced, meat, cheese, bakery, mushrooms, jellies and jams, pickled delights, and oftentimes local crafts and art.

Fortune Hour gets cozy with local gin, Nov 10

Given the choice of cool and local or just cool, Big Bowl prefers to sidle up to the little guy, which in this case is FEW American Gin.

On Thursday, Nov. 10 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Big Bowl's Ohio Street location will continue its tradition of fun things local with a Fortune Hour dedictated to FEW (that's code for P-A-R-T-Y).

"Time Out" Recommends Top Kids Menus

"Time Out Chicago" has selected Big Bowl as being in the top five picks for restaurants "Doing Cool Things With Kids Menus." There isn’t any mac and cheese; there are kid sized portions of the dishes that adults like to eat at Big Bowl, which makes kids feel pretty special. Parents can also feel good that their kids are eating all natural chicken, beef or pork, and there are no trans fats or corn syrup in any of the kids menu items.

Check out the “Time Out Kids” magazine for many more recommendations on kid friendly dining and events.

Flick the Switch for Earth Hour

The opportunity to give the Earth one giant hug of appreciation comes around again on Saturday, March 26 for the globally celebrated Earth Hour.

Fortune Hour Brings Art to the Table

March’s Fortune Hour celebration at Big Bowl on Ohio and Rush featured the work of local artist Richie Estrada. Estrada is known for strong, vibrant pieces, and he works with a lot of reclaimed materials and paint. The crowd mingled with the artist, and sampled local craft beers presented by Louis Glunz. Pieces will be on display throughout the month, and many are available for purchase.

Family Farmed Expo begins March 17

When the Family Farmed Expo begins this week in Chicago, Big Bowl will have a seat at the table.

Executive Chef Marc Bernard will be one of the panelists on the Farm to Table Connection - producers and restaurant owners learn lessons from veteran restaurateurs and vendors on how to source local products.

    Local Beer/Local Art March 10

Continuing in the tradition of focusing on all things local, this month’s Fortune Hour at Big Bowl on Ohio presents locally produced artwork and locally crafted beer. Attendance is free!

Chicago artist Estrada is known for using recycled materials and paints to create his work.

    Time to Make the Dumplings!

Each year during our Chinese New Year celebration, one of our favorite things to do is to give free dumpling cooking classes.* Why do we do this? Well, we love Chinese New Year. It’s about new beginnings and creating good fortune for yourself and others, and this is one of the ways we like to say thank you to our guests.

    But why dumplings?

A free ginger ale to toast China's president

In honor of China's President Hu Jintao's trade mission to the U.S. and Chicago, we're offering a trade deal of our own. You'll get a complimentary fresh ginger ale in exchange for naming one of the Chicago area companies that will be a inking deal with China. For clues, click here.

The cure-all for cabin fever? Museum free days & offer

Even the hardiest winter warriors appreciate coming in from the cold, especially those with kids or anyone who needs a mental health day now and again. The ideal place? A day at the museum when it's free.

Family Fun to ring in 2011

Ringing in the New Year can be a fun time for families - activities that can tire out the little ones early enough so you can have a grownup evening, too.

For those who want to venture downtown, Navy Pier has a kid-friendly line up replete with fireworks to cap the evening on Dec. 31. Starting at 6 p.m., in Festival Hall, there will be a spectacular showcase of hip hop dancers, live bands, a human beat box, and more. Fireworks follow shortly after 8 p.m.

    Cold? Soup's on

When winter starts to settle in and unsettle us with its cold temperatures, the equalizing factor is soup - a bowl of goodness that's hot, warm and comforting.

At Big Bowl, the hot and sour soup remedies the cold with its depth of flavor, heat and zing. A classic soup from China's north which knows a thing or two about the cold, hot and sour soup is both yin and yang. No wonder it so easily warms after coming in from the cold.

Kids' Coat Donations at Fortune Hour

In the spirit of the season, this Thursday's Fortune Hour at Big Bowl on Ohio is all about giving back to the community. We are collecting new and gently used coats, hats and gloves for underserved and needy students from Spencer Elementary in Chicago.

    Warm-up after skating

The season is all about whirling (and falling) on the ice skating rink with your favorite someone, rooting on the kids or just yourself taking in the moment.

    Mag Mile Festival of Lights

This Saturday, November 20, check out the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival in downtown Chicago. The lighting procession is hosted by Grand Marshall Mickey Mouse and close friend Minnie as they lead the way in the illumination of more than one million lights on Michigan Avenue, from Oak Street to Wacker Drive.

    Year Round Farmers Markets

Just because the weather is getting cooler, it does not mean that our local farmers are hibernating like bears. It's true, you won't find strawberries, but it's squash season and the brussel sprouts are coming in...there is a plethora of beautiful produce available. In addition, you can find local cheeses and baked goods, local meats, eggs and poultry.
"But where are they? They are not in the usual spot." Like any sensible people, they have moved indoors.

Chef Keith Wood on Kare 11

In celebration of the new vegetarian menu at Big Bowl, Chef Keith Wood visits the Kare 11 studio in Minnesota to talk about some of the new dishes, and to demonstrate the recipe of the new Lucky 8 Vegetables with Tofu. As promised, the link to the video and recipe follows:

    Trick-or-Treating in the 'hood

Pint-sized creatures and other masked goblins will soon be on the prowl for Halloween, which means cities throughout Illinois have designated days and hours for trick-or-treating. Click here for a complete list.

As a reminder, communities are also providing a check-list of safety measures that can apply to any city. Take a look here for a refresher.

Fortune Hour Welcomes New Neighbors From Block 37 Nov 4

The day has finally arrived...Block 37 is here! The last buildings to have stood on this site--bordered by State, Washington, Dearborn and Randolph-- were leveled in 1989. Since that time the property has had a number of functions; from public art gallery to ice skating rink.

Meals on Wheels Chicago Celebrity Chefs Ball tonight

    SPOTLIGHT: Serendipidous food and photography

For photography student Jacob Yeung, being at the right place at the right time proved to be everything.

A Big Bowl host and carry-out staffer, Yeung accompanied Executive Marc Bernard and the team to the annual Green City Market's chefs barbecue over the summer. His job that evening: photograph the event, which would provide photos for the restaurant and practice for Yeung. Yeung is two years shy of earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in fine art photography at Columbia College.

Celebrate local treasures at Fortune Hour Oct 7

On the first Thursday of every month, the Big Bowl on Ohio and Rush has an after work party called the "Fortune Hour." Every month is a little different, but we always try to spread good fortune by celebrating local products, businesses, and even local artists.

Big Bowl stirs it up on “HouseSmarts” Sept 26

    Big Bowl gets greener...with beer?

No, we are not talking about any kind of St Patrick's day special. We are talking about our mantra; organic, eco-friendly, local and sustainable. We are covering all of the bases by adding Goose island Green Line Pale Ale* to the draft selections.

One aspect of the beverage offerings at Big Bowl is that we have a very fun beer list. We offer a range of domestic favorites; some familiar and some not, a nice assortment of Asian beer, and a great section of micro brew and craft beers.

    Fortune Hour turns art-wise

A taste of prosperity accompanies each Big Bowl Fortune Hour, and now the ongoing event can make us all the richer in the arts.

The next Fortune Hour - Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010 from 5 p.m. tp 7 p.m. - brings the artwork of Michael Reese Heavner, an ironworker-turned painter who uses reclaimed wood and discarded paint as a medum. His artwork will be available for purchase at the event and remain on display for two weeks. Heavner, known as "Heavy," began painting as a way to reuse wood from an 1860s barn.

Big Bowl Chefs get farm fresh

For two days, chefs from all eight Big Bowl locations gathered in Chicago to talk, eat and experience farm-fresh food, starting from a visit to Nichols Farm and culminating with a feast in the backyard of Executive Chef Marc Bernard. Each chef prepared a dish, inspired by the farm visit and Bernard's garden. The purpose? To taste truly fresh local ingredients and to be inspired. Look for Bernard's upcoming blog post for more details.

    Windy City Rubber Ducky Derby

On St. Patrick's Day, thousands of people turn out to see the Chicago River turn green. Well in August, it turns yellow. At 1:00 PM on Thursday August 12, 2010, more than 30,000 yellow rubber duckies will be vying for top honors on Derby Day! "Why on earth," do you ask? Because it's fun, it's pretty darn hilarious, and it's all for a good cause. You can adopt one of these fearsome, warlike duckies for your very own to support Special Olympics Illinois, and it also qualifies you to win great prizes.

If You Grow It, We Will Cook It

Chef Ozzie Ocegueda from Big Bowl on Cedar thinks that this has been one of the best summer growing seasons in the past few years. The variety that has been available at the farmer's market has been amazing, and the flavors outstanding. There are just some summers where you get the perfect combination of sun and rainfall that brings everything to ultimate fruition.

Ozzie has been spending a couple of days every week picking up what's best at the market, and he decided that it was time to give back.

Farm to Bar Bash August 4th

Join Big Bowl on Ohio Street for our “Farm to Bar”* bash on Wednesday, August 4th from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. In conjunction with Big Bowl’s philosophy of using local and seasonal produce whenever possible, we are applying the same principles to the special cocktails for this event.

    Spotlight: Service with a smile

Who are the people at Big Bowl and what do they do? Meet them here under the Spotlight.

    Who: Bobby Rogers

Alias:  Triple B for "Big Bowl Bob"

    Years at Big Bowl: 10

    Position: Divisional Trainer, Staff Whisperer.

What you would do if you weren't working at Big Bowl: professional tri athlete and a personal
trainer with a focus in nutrition.

Hug a farmer, buy a peach

With a national proclamation, unprecedented growth in farmers markets and the coining of the term "locavore" to define those who eat locally, the farmer is the new rock star.

How do you love us? Let's count the ways

A best friend may not tell the whole truth and a child might "forget" essential details, but you can always count on numbers. According to a recent tally of Big Bowl best selling new menu items, Cashew Chicken rules the roost.

Since the new menu rollout earlier this summer, Cashew Chicken is preferred about 27 percent more than the second most popular dish, Steak and Noodles. But if you dine at the Edina restaurant in Minnesota, you prefer this chicken dish 50 percent more often.

Bangkok Shrimp and Scallops comes in at No.

    Gridlock doesn't mean landlock

Summer time in the city and suburbs is synonymous with festivals practically every weekend - and usually street closings and congestion. Add road repairs and detours and you're practically housebound.

Your good fortune awaits, July 8

You're invited to Fortune Hour Thursday, July 8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for complimentary appetizers paired with Singha, the popular beer of Thailand, and TY KU, the original sake based liqueur. The event, held at the Ohio location only, will also feature specially priced Singha at $3 and TY KU cocktails for $5.

    Games people play

The 4th of July is over but backyard barbecues, picnics and summer gatherings have many more weeks to come. Here's a look at favorite outdoor games.

How do you pass the time? Got any favorites? Share them below for others to enjoy.

Cooking up a storm at the Green City Market

Walk or bike to the Green City Market, pick up truly farm fresh eggs, peruse table after glorious table of just picked seasonal produce and then take a seat to watch Executive Chef Marc Bernard's cooking demonstration at 10:30 a.m., tomorrow, June 26. You'd be hard pressed to find a better way to spend a Saturday morning in the city.

It's Music to your ears at Millennium Park

Listening to classical music may give babies a jump start on life, so perhaps the works of Beethoven and Dvorák might get the neurons firing faster in grownups? At the very least, music can calm and and lift the spirit, making Millennium Park the idea place to be this summer.

The 76th season of Grant Park Music Festival at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion kicks off this week with free concerts. Open rehearsals are held in the afternoon two or three times during the week prior to the evening concert, offering plenty of opportunities to experience the Grant Park Orchestra and chorus.

    Get the Blues this weekend

We can't think of a better reason to be blue this weekend than carving out some time for 2010 Chicago Blues Festival, from June 11 to June 13 at Grant Park. It's the largest free blues festival in the world and remains the largest of Chicago's music festivals drawing more than 640,000 people who prove why the windy city is the "Blues Capital of the World."

Celebrate Fortune Hour Thursday, June 3 (5 - 7 PM)

This month features a complimentary wine tasting pairing a variety of our popular appetizers and entrees.

Featured wines are Santa Rita Sauvignon Blanc (Chile), Adami Prosecco (Italy), Santa Julia Malbec (Argentina) and Man Cabernet (South Africa).

Complimentary passed appetizers and half priced Red or Passion Pomegranate Sangria $3 / glass. Reserve at 312-951-1888

The Farmer Comes to Big Bowl

Big Bowl in Schaumburg is bringing the farmer closer to the community through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).

Every Wednesday beginning June 16 through October, Simply Wisconsin will drop off locally grown produce, organic eggs, meat, and other products to the Big Bowl in Schaumburg, allowing consumers who have purchased a seasonal “share” to enjoy organic fruits, vegetables and other items directly from nearby farms.

    Museum of Contemporary Art

Located just a short walk from Big Bowl on Ohio and Rush Streets, the MCA also offers educational seminars, family themed Saturday morning events, a gift and bookstore, 300-seat theater, and a terraced sculpture garden with a great view of Lake Michigan.

    Chicago Boat Tours

Big Bowl at Ohio and Rush is often the first stop before or after an architectural tour of Chicago. The tours are launched within walking distance and provide a fun, informative and panoramic view of the city. It’s a great way to preserve and sustain Chicago’s rich, cultural history.

    Gene Siskel Film Center

Big Bowl is a big supporter of sustainability and community that extends beyond food. We make an annual donation to the Gene Siskel Film Center, a sustaining force for independent and classic films which puts Chicago at the forefront of this genre.

    Chicago's Green City Market

Big Bowl supports local farmers’ markets, and buys seasonal produce for the menu from some of the same vendors as those at Chicago’s Green City Market. GCM celebrates its 12th year this season and has been named one of America’s Best Farmers’ Markets in the country by Travel and Leisure magazine.

    Michigan Avenue

Big Bowl at Ohio and Rush Streets is steps away from the world-renowned Magnificent Mile, Chicago's version of the Champs-Elysées. The grand wide boulevard is made up of places like the Apple Store, Garretts Popcorn and the John Hancock Observatory as well as designer shops, such as Cartier, Ralph Lauren and Tiffany’s. The Mag Mile is also home to the historic Water Tower, one of only a few surviving structures of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

    Carry Out Packaging

We are so fortunate to interact with so many people inside of Big Bowl, but there is a large number of guests who only stop by to pick up a meal to go. In the ongoing efforts to lessen our environmental impact, of course we had to look at our carry out packaging. A great thought, but easier said than done.
